The 20th Century Space Race

The year was 1957, the day was October 4th. The Russian satellite, Sputnik had just launched, and the Space Race had begun. The United States of America felt the pressure more than ever to create a national space agency, one which could compete with the Soviets.  To initiate this, American President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, establishing what has since become known as NASA.
